ACC Charity Walk

Members from ACC will be walking 75 miles from Aberystwyth to the SWCC in Penwyllt to raise money for the Cave Rescue Organisation, which will be celebrating its 75th Anniversary in August.

The walk will take four days from the 10th – 13th of August, covering the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons.

Thruth re-released

Rich has for the past ‘few’ years been collecting, scanning, typing (with the help of a few others) and re-editing all the back issues of Thrutch – the magazine of the Aberystwyth Caving Club. All issues are now available online to view for your enjoyment.

This has been no small task, so good effort Rich. Now how about Eugene?

Sling drop tests

While Dyneema® has a much greater strength-weight ratio (static load) than nylon, its elasticity is far less. At DMM’s test-tower we took a look to see what implications this difference has for a dynamic loading on to a Dyneema® sling and what happens if there is a knot in the sling? You can see the comparative results between Nylon and Dyneema® slings (all rated at 22 kN) in this video.

Holiday in Devon

Who wants to get pissed? Proper job!

Exeter USS have invited us to Devon for the weekend of the 18th June. We are staying in a stone barn, in the legendary Buckfastleigh, famous for its pissed monks, and visiting the caverns of Afton red rift, the cider barn, Pridhamsleigh and the beach.

Exeter are sorting food, and they DO NOT do food on Fridays, so bring your own. accommodation is £5.00 a night, though the final price will depend on your fuel bill, determined by where you are. If you want to come get in touch (please please please get in touch. I need to pass this on, plus it makes me happy). if you’re out of Aber you A) suck and B) need to organise your own transport.

And if you can’t get enough of Devon in one weekend, Henry has invited people to stay at his parents house near Barnstaple for a few days afterwards. All welcome.

Mid-Wales mine rescue practice

The Team covers mines rescue across the South and Mid Wales region and this is our annual practice. We’ll be based at the the new HQ for the Mid Wales store/trailer which has camping available (including hot showers etc), wonderful scenery, and lots of sheep! The owner of the farm is an ex-Cardiff Uni Caving Club president, a regular of callouts in the past, and a strong supporter of the Team. We’ll probably organise a barbeque, barrels, etc… so plan for a fun weekend.

Many of us are cavers as opposed to miners so there will be LOTS to learn. The North Wales Cave Rescue Team are joining us so it will be an opportunity to work together and pick up skills from others. Blwch Glas has been recommended as the mine of choice for this year’s event.

AGM

It’s AGM time!

Location: Tan y Bwlch beach
Time: Saturday 22nd, from 7pm
Bring: Alcohol, Food, Sleeping bags.

The club tent will be there so feel free to sleep on the beach. Also, there will be a BBQ so bring any food you want cooking. If you don’t know where it will be, zoom and scroll round the map below to find your way to the green arrow – there is a free car park at the northern end of the beach if needed.
