As you may or may not know, we have our first weekend trip of the year planned this weekend. More South Wales caving, we’re going to the SWCC in the Swansea Valley. Here’s a link to their website – http://www.swcc.org.uk/ – it’s a nice area with some caves in it.
We’ll be heading down on Friday evening after lectures and coming back on Sunday, probably quite late due to caving/hangovers/general faff. If you want to come, please email me so we can put you on the list.
First come first served.
If you decide you want to go, remember to bring your own booze, a sleeping bag, change of clothes, caving clothes, spare shoes, spare socks etc. Having your own wellies too would be awesome (Toby keeps moaning about drying them all, and he reckons they’ll still be wet from last weekend). Once again, please, please, PLEASE email me if you want to go.

Don’t forget to come to the first social of the new term – at The Fountain this Wednesday at 9pm. If you’re new to Aber and don’t know where the pub is, check this map out, or meet some of our members at the Porter’s Lodge (university entrance) at 8pm who will take you down into town. If you live at the bottom of the slope then meet at 8.30 in Weatherspoons (railway station)…look out for people in caving t-shirts.
Day trips happening this weekend will be organised at the social, so make sure you’re there so as to not miss out.

After Tim’s unfortunate leave towards Rhayader me and Josh, eager to continue the walk, headed towards builth wells were our hungry tummy’s anticipated a nourishing meal. Unfortunately, our lack of Tim greatly reduced our map abilities, and thus I and Josh ended up getting lost in the middle of the Cambrian Mountains somewhere as we don’t understand public footpaths. Any who, we managed to head down towards a road from the mountains and make our way for Builth wells where we had fish and chips, mmmmmmmm.
Our trail then headed south along the B4520 towards Brecon in the late evening, which involved me and Josh forgetting who Hugh Grant was, being scared and excited by the DANGER ZONE (which was making bangs and explosions all night) and eventually arriving at Merthyr Cynog where we camped in a random field under the meteor shower and lovely stars.
Our early start in the morning towards Sennybridge got us slightly lost in some more mountains as we planned to cut across for a detour, nevertheless, we found a public footpath and ended up in Soar, where we headed south and then west along the A40 to Sennybridge. After a short break at Sennybridge at around 2pm, we headed away from Sennybridge to dan-yr-ogof caves down the A4067, where our excitement for the finish line grew.
The lovely views and cool horses we saw at the Cray Reservoir kept us going towards dan-yr-ogof caves where we had a short break; from here we then decided to approach the SWCC through the craig-y-nos country park, our worst mistake EVER. After walking round a park deluded for at least an hour we came across the road leading towards the SWCC where our final ascent begun. After consuming our last energy tablet thingy, we followed the road up towards the SWCC, where we encountered Tim and Chris, about halfway up, cheering us on in there comfy, lovely and fast moving car. Needless to say, we were pretty knackered, and after a final push, we reached the SWCC were Tim and Chris welcomed us with delicious food and brilliant cider, yum. Overall, a great laugh and good fun, 150 miles next year!
P.S. Do a 75 mile walk and massage your feet it feels absolutely incredible.

ACC members walked 75 miles from Aberystwyth to the SWCC in Penwyllt to raise money for the Cave Rescue Organisation to celebrate it’s 75th Anniversary.
The walk, organised by myself, started on the 10th August and ended on the 13th. Five ACC members set off from Aberystwyth including Olivia Dawson, Chris Belton, Jonothan Lee, Josh Lasson and myself. Chris and Oli joined us for the first day but had to return to Aberystwyth for work and Dachstein preparations respectively.
The first night we camped in Daffyd Jones’s field near Devil’s Bridge and the second night, after covering a total of 40 miles in two days, was spent next to the Claerwen Reservoir. I had to head back to Aberystwyth on the morning of Day 3 after suffering from very bad blisters, which reduced my walking pace to a rate that would have seen us fail the walk if i had continued.
Look out for part 2 by Jono Lee

Who wants to get pissed? Proper job!
Exeter USS have invited us to Devon for the weekend of the 18th June. We are staying in a stone barn, in the legendary Buckfastleigh, famous for its pissed monks, and visiting the caverns of Afton red rift, the cider barn, Pridhamsleigh and the beach.
Exeter are sorting food, and they DO NOT do food on Fridays, so bring your own. accommodation is £5.00 a night, though the final price will depend on your fuel bill, determined by where you are. If you want to come get in touch (please please please get in touch. I need to pass this on, plus it makes me happy). if you’re out of Aber you A) suck and B) need to organise your own transport.
And if you can’t get enough of Devon in one weekend, Henry has invited people to stay at his parents house near Barnstaple for a few days afterwards. All welcome.

To reiterate what Oli has said in the club emails, we have two weekend trips planned this term.

1/2 May – Expedition training weekend at Daf’s farm, which will include a rescue scenario in a local mine.
This is a bit different in that it’s being organised by Joel Corrigan and Ian Holmes (has said they’re happy for us to come en masse), so he wants everyone that’s going to join the facebook group and pay the £15 asap. It’ll be a good opportunity to pick up some caving skills, especially since it’s being held so close to Aber.
14-16 May – Back to the Belfry again for more table dancing.
There will be numerous day trips going on around the exams too, so make sure you come to the socials!

Quick summary of what you need to know for the weekend ;
1. We’re staying at the Brackenbottom – Bradford Potholing Club.
2. We will be doing vertical caves and Club SRT kits are limited – reply to Fran asap to secure one.
3. You need to be SRT competent before going underground. This means Chris needs to see you do rebelays etc. in the tree. Text him to arrange a time tomorrow (Tuesday) if you’re one of those that needs to be checked over/get some practice.
4. Trip is £30 – bring money to the social so food can be bought for everyone.

Personally I think this is great. Though the words Who and Why spring to mind. And people, bear in mind that the cave is likely to contain pitches. If you want to partake in a trip here and you’re not confident with your SRT, get in touch with Chris.

Hey up ducks,
Can people who want to come on next weekend’s trip to S. Wales please email me and pay up at the social. 25 squid please.
In addition to SRT practice (1pm this Wednesday at the tree), Chris will also be teaching how to lifeline. I believe that in addition to teaching you basic belaying, he’ll be going through what to do if your mate falls off the ladder in to a waterfall, and how to get some lardy fresher up a ladder. You will regret skipping this next year as you intrepidly lead freshers into Swildons, or sooner (and possibly more), if you tell me you ‘don’t know how’ to lifeline me down something that scares me.
I still have enough caving club clothes to start a charity shop. Feel free to come round my (new) house and collect them.
See you all on Wednesday, if not before.
