More trips and training…

Hey up ducks,

Can people who want to come on next weekend’s trip to S. Wales please email me and pay up at the social. 25 squid please.

In addition to SRT practice (1pm this Wednesday at the tree), Chris will also be teaching how to lifeline. I believe that in addition to teaching you basic belaying, he’ll be going through what to do if your mate falls off the ladder in to a waterfall, and how to get some lardy fresher up a ladder. You will regret skipping this next year as you intrepidly lead freshers into Swildons, or sooner (and possibly more), if you tell me you ‘don’t know how’ to lifeline me down something that scares me.

I still have enough caving club clothes to start a charity shop. Feel free to come round my (new) house and collect them.

See you all on Wednesday, if not before.

Trips, training, trips and trivia

Trip 19th-21st

Firstly could everyone who wants to go to Mendips for the weekends partying and caving please email to confirm? If you haven’t yet made the pilgrimage to the legendary Belfry, or honoured the gods of drink at the shrine that is The Hunters, now’s your chance. Money at the social please. If you can’t make it, let me know and we’ll arrange another time to collect your money…but no deposit = no food I’m afraid.

SRT Training

Last weekend was a great success. Well done everyone, the SRT was great (cheers to Tim for the organisation and Chris for the training). However it is imperative that you all still practice so you’re speedy and confident underground. Chris is going to be doing another mass SRT training session on Wednesday (17th) at 1pm AT THE TREE. If you’re not sure where this is give him a ring on 07813496886.
Please note that you need to demonstrate your rebelay technique above ground if you want to go on SRT trips (Megan, Jono, Danni, Tilda, Matt and Xian.) We might do more SRT at the weekend so please come along. If you want one-on-one training for either basic or advanced SRT give him a ring.

Clare

Could those who want to go to Clare please give Rich & Rufus the deposit and tell them whether they are happy to drive if necessary, and where they’ll be departing from. See the ACC facebook group’s event for the latest.

Oh Henry

Its probably about time for me to start badgering you about the next Oh Henry. you know the drill by now – trip reports, poems, in jokes, slanderous abuse and cartoons to ocd7.

(Nathan – if you’re reading this, dig the spelling)

See you at the tree/Fountain.

Ystradfellte Weekend

This weekend (Feb 12-14th) is the South Wales trip to the Croydon’s (Godre Pentre) caving hut in Ystradfellte. The Croydons is similar to the Westminster (if you went on that trip) so mind your head on the stairs (Huw).

We have 15 places booked and hopefully SRT will be an aspect of the trip so if you still need to get some practise in then call Chris ASAP!

If you would like to come then please reply to me *(tww8)* or tell me at the social on Wednesday, also if you are able to drive this weekend then please mention this in your email or at the social. If you email me, don’t forget to say what time you can leave on Friday 12th and if you need to borrow any kit.

As usual don’t forget the essentials: sleeping bag and booze, and of course remembering a few other things is always helpful.

Trips this term

Welcome back everyone and Happy New Year.

Although most of you have got exams to worry about this month, the committee have been working away to organise some club weekends away for you to look forward to. We hope to visit all four caving regions this term (S.Wales, Mendips, Peaks and Dales), and also put to use those sessions on the sea wall by doing some SRT. This post will be updated once huts confirm bookings.

Huts booked for this term:

Croydon (Wales) – 13/14 February
Belfry (Mendips) – 19/20 February
SWCC (Wales) – 6/7 March
Brackenbottom (Yorkshire) – 27/28 March

No doubt there will be other day trips occurring, so make sure you turn up to socials. Also, if you need to practice your SRT before going underground, then get in touch with Chris.

Party at the Belfry

To celebrate the fact that Oli will be 22 and I will be turning 20-something this month, you are all cordially invited to our birthday bash at the Belfry on the 23rd of January. The fancy dress theme is ‘ball gowns’ (men too), so you’ll have to scrub up nice for this one.

No caving is being planned, though you’re free to do what you want, and you will need to organise your own food (or join us in the Hunters) as this isn’t a club trip proper. There’ll be a few of us going from Aber so don’t imagine lifts down will be a problem. Find the event on facebook for more details.

Hope to see you there :)

Mendip fireworks & CHECC

This weekFireworksend we’re off to Mendips again, mainly because Priddy hold a pretty good fireworks display and bonfire on the village green. Reading and Exeter University clubs will be there this time as well, so it promises to be a lively weekend. If you want to come, bring £25 to the pub tonight.

We’re also collecting monies now for CHECC (20-22nd Nov) as there’s a discount for early bookings. You’ve probably heard enough about what CHECC is from us already…if not, well it’s basically a big meet-up for all the uni caving clubs and lots of fun. It’s at the SWCC hut this year and will cost £20 all-in. Please bring money to the social, or to someone on the committee asap. Any ideas for a fancy dress theme then let us know.

Llangattock day trip

Whitewalls

We think a fortnight is too long to go without caving, so a day trip seems in order. We will be going to Llangattock, which has a range of dry caves suitable for all abilities. Spaces are limited, so please email me if you want to go. While it is first come first served, priority will be given to those who haven’t been able to go on trips yet this term.

The trip will cost £6, and include the use of the Whitewalls facilities. Money will be collected at the social – if you can’t make it grab me on 07762302955 to arrange an alternative. We will be departing at 9.30 am from the Porters Lodge for those up top and from an as yet undecided town location for those living below. If you live in town say so in your email.
Eat a hearty breakfast and bring above and below ground snacks. Im going away caving on Friday, so if you have any problems after that ask your president Tim to sort them out. His email adress is president@abercavers.co.uk and his mobile number is 07779704761

See you tomorrow and underground.

Weekend in S.Wales

Westminster hutThe first weekend trip of the year is here and we’ll be staying in the Westminster caving hut on the south Brecon Beacons. The club will be doing different types of caves over the weekend, so it will a good introduction to the sport, whatever your ability.

Currently we’ve got loads of spaces left on the trip, so if you’re interested just send me an email. You can also sign up at this week’s social (deadline will be Thursday 1pm). The overall cost will be £20 and includes everything. Can you please bring this money to the social so that we can buy the food for you.  If you haven’t paid membership yet then that will be an extra fiver too.

Weekend trips have a strong social element to them, so if you would like to get to know other members of the club and have the opportunity to try a variety of caves then this is most definitely an event for you.

Hope to see you at the social, 9pm Wednesday at The Fountain as always. People will be at the porters lodge at 8.30pm to bring those of you that don’t know the way yet.

Derbyshire

Chris

Alex, Chris, Josh, Henry, Oli & Steve. Stayed at the TSG (31/07 – 03/08).

Bit of a last minute trip as we needed to collect some dodgy Oldham lamps from Selby that we had bought off ebay. Thanks to the army losing some beds Chris was able to come caving, and this was also Steve’s first trip with ACC. Fortunately for us, Steve was able to show us round some of the caves and between us ended up doing Peak, Eldon and Great Masson Mine. While Alex’s fear of heights still needs working on, we did have the chance to brush up on our juggling skills (or rather throwing on floor skills), and learnt not to trust Josh with a camera when changing on the roadside.  A censored selection of photos, mostly from the mine, can be found here.
