ACC Charity walk (Part Two) By Jono Lee

After Tim’s unfortunate leave towards Rhayader me and Josh, eager to continue the walk, headed towards builth wells were our hungry tummy’s anticipated a nourishing meal. Unfortunately, our lack of Tim greatly reduced our map abilities, and thus I and Josh ended up getting lost in the middle of the Cambrian Mountains somewhere as we don’t understand public footpaths. Any who, we managed to head down towards a road from the mountains and make our way for Builth wells where we had fish and chips, mmmmmmmm.

Our trail then headed south along the B4520 towards Brecon in the late evening, which involved me and Josh forgetting who Hugh Grant was, being scared and excited by the DANGER ZONE (which was making bangs and explosions all night) and eventually arriving at Merthyr Cynog where we  camped in a random field under the meteor shower and lovely stars.

Our early start in the morning towards Sennybridge got us slightly lost in some more mountains as we planned to cut across for a detour, nevertheless, we found a public footpath and ended up in Soar, where we headed south and then west along the A40 to Sennybridge. After a short break at Sennybridge at around 2pm, we headed away from Sennybridge to dan-yr-ogof caves down the A4067, where our excitement for the finish line grew.

The lovely views and cool horses we saw at the Cray Reservoir kept us going towards dan-yr-ogof caves where we had a short break; from here we then decided to approach the SWCC through the craig-y-nos country park, our worst mistake EVER. After walking round a park deluded for at least an hour we came across the road leading towards the SWCC where our final  ascent begun. After consuming our last energy tablet thingy, we followed the road up towards the SWCC, where we encountered Tim and Chris, about halfway up, cheering us on in there comfy, lovely and fast moving car. Needless to say, we were pretty knackered, and after a final push, we reached the SWCC were Tim and Chris welcomed us with delicious food and brilliant cider, yum.  Overall, a great laugh and good fun, 150 miles next year!

P.S. Do a 75 mile walk and massage your feet it feels absolutely incredible.

ACC Charity Walk (Part One) by Tim Wiffen

ACC members walked 75 miles from Aberystwyth to the SWCC in Penwyllt to raise money for the Cave Rescue Organisation to celebrate it’s 75th Anniversary.

The walk, organised by myself, started on the 10th August and ended on the 13th. Five ACC members set off from Aberystwyth including Olivia Dawson, Chris Belton, Jonothan Lee, Josh Lasson and myself. Chris and Oli joined us for the first day but had to return to Aberystwyth for work and Dachstein preparations respectively.

The first night we camped in Daffyd Jones’s field near Devil’s Bridge and the second night, after covering a total of 40 miles in two days, was spent next to the Claerwen Reservoir. I had to head back to Aberystwyth on the morning of Day 3 after suffering from very bad blisters, which reduced my walking pace to a rate that would have seen us fail the walk if i had continued.

Look out for part 2 by Jono Lee

Dachstein

Happily the ACC contingent (and indeed the whole expedition) survived Dachstein. This means my leaving-do can continue as planned.

Thruth re-released

Rich has for the past ‘few’ years been collecting, scanning, typing (with the help of a few others) and re-editing all the back issues of Thrutch – the magazine of the Aberystwyth Caving Club. All issues are now available online to view for your enjoyment.

This has been no small task, so good effort Rich. Now how about Eugene?

Sling drop tests

Useful video to watch…http://dmmclimbing.com/video.asp?id=5

While Dyneema® has a much greater strength-weight ratio (static load) than nylon, its elasticity is far less. At DMM’s test-tower we took a look to see what implications this difference has for a dynamic loading on to a Dyneema® sling and what happens if there is a knot in the sling? You can see the comparative results between Nylon and Dyneema® slings (all rated at 22 kN) in this video.

Holiday in Devon

Who wants to get pissed? Proper job!

Exeter USS have invited us to Devon for the weekend of the 18th June. We are staying in a stone barn, in the legendary Buckfastleigh, famous for its pissed monks, and visiting the caverns of Afton red rift, the cider barn, Pridhamsleigh and the beach.

Exeter are sorting food, and they DO NOT do food on Fridays, so bring your own. accommodation is £5.00 a night, though the final price will depend on your fuel bill, determined by where you are. If you want to come get in touch (please please please get in touch. I need to pass this on, plus it makes me happy). if you’re out of Aber you A) suck and B) need to organise your own transport.

And if you can’t get enough of Devon in one weekend, Henry has invited people to stay at his parents house near Barnstaple for a few days afterwards. All welcome.
