From: engadget.com…
“You know what’s really annoying? Teenagers. Even more annoying? Teenagers inventing legitimately useful things and getting awards for it. Meet Alexander Kendrick, the 16-year old inventor of a new low-frequency radio that allows for cave-texting, which isn’t some fresh new euphemism, it just means people can finally text while deep underground. How deep, you ask — well, Alexander’s team of intrepid explorers went far enough (946 feet) to record the deepest known digital communication ever in the United States. What you see the young chap holding above is the collapsible radio antenna, though plans are already afoot to ruggedize and miniaturize the equipment to make it more practical for cave explorers and rescuers. Way to go, kid.”

On TV this week…
1. Mexico’s Cave of Crystals stunned geologists when it was first discovered in 2000. The underground chamber contains some of the largest natural crystals ever found – some of the selenite structures have grown to more than 10m long. Professor Iain Stewart got a rare glimpse of the subterranean spectacle while filming for the new BBC series How the Earth Made Us.
How The Earth Made Us: on Tuesday 19th January on BBC Two at 2100.
2. Iolo Williams goes underground to explore the landscapes within caves and old mines. With on-screen English subtitles.
Tir Cymru: Thursday 21st January on S4C at 2130.

Welcome back everyone and Happy New Year.
Although most of you have got exams to worry about this month, the committee have been working away to organise some club weekends away for you to look forward to. We hope to visit all four caving regions this term (S.Wales, Mendips, Peaks and Dales), and also put to use those sessions on the sea wall by doing some SRT. This post will be updated once huts confirm bookings.
Huts booked for this term:
Croydon (Wales) – 13/14 February
Belfry (Mendips) – 19/20 February
SWCC (Wales) – 6/7 March
Brackenbottom (Yorkshire) – 27/28 March
No doubt there will be other day trips occurring, so make sure you turn up to socials. Also, if you need to practice your SRT before going underground, then get in touch with Chris.

To celebrate the fact that Oli will be 22 and I will be turning 20-something this month, you are all cordially invited to our birthday bash at the Belfry on the 23rd of January. The fancy dress theme is ‘ball gowns’ (men too), so you’ll have to scrub up nice for this one.
No caving is being planned, though you’re free to do what you want, and you will need to organise your own food (or join us in the Hunters) as this isn’t a club trip proper. There’ll be a few of us going from Aber so don’t imagine lifts down will be a problem. Find the event on facebook for more details.
Hope to see you there

The Christmas issue of ACC’s journal, Oh Henry!, is now out. 24 pages full with abuse, banter, serious speleological articles, rants, letters and games – this is one edition you don’t want to miss out on. Paper copies are currently limited, but if you register on this website and pay £1 to Carly, Henry or Oli, you will be able to read it online.
Hope you all have a good Christmas and New Year, and see you all next term.

Due to recent movements in the entrance series, Swildon’s Hole has been closed for a short period. More info on ukCaving.
From the CSCC website:
Following consultations, Robin Main the land owner, has decided to close Swildon’s Hole for a period of one month to see how things settle down in the entrance. Please stay away for now and respect the landowners decision. The latest information will be posted here as it becomes available.

<<<Update 9/1/10>>>
Following further consultations at the end of the monitoring period and on the advice of CSCC, the cave will now be reopened.
All persons are reminded that they enter the cave at their own risk and are advised to exercise considerable caution in the entrance area and are advised to consider avoiding the area around Showerbath Chamber.

The Christmas meal is going to be on Thursday 10th of December at the Belle Vue Royal Hotel, 8pm. The menu is £13 for two courses or £17 for all three.
The menu is at http://www.bellevueroyalhotel.co.uk/Christmas.pdf
If you want to go we need your deposit of £10 by midday Tuesday. Give the money to Alex or Tim. Alex will be free to come collect money from you any time over the next 3 days. You also need to give him your meal choices at the same time. You can get in contact with Alex by text or email about your choices and how to pass the money on.
Alex Jones, Mob: 07814 660 561 E’mail: appjones@hotmail.com
P.S. The fancy dress theme is now officially decided as ‘Ladies and Tramps’. So for the ladies that’s dressing up as the epitome of class and high culture; for the blokes, get your rotten leather coats and fingerless gloves out…

Right. Its time for the club journal’s second issue, and a few things stand between us and speleo-literary success. The most important is the lack of articles. Get writing guys. I’ve heard some amazing ideas being floated in the pub so get them down on paper and email them to me.
For those of you who dont have any ideas, give Henry or me a quid and get the first copy to peruse and inspire (maybe). A high literary standard is not compulsory, and articles can be as silly or as serious as you like. It would be nice to have a few ‘My first caving trip’, ‘My first caving game,’ and ‘My first time being driven by ACC,’ styley articles, if only so we can rip the piss out of them in volume three. Cartoons, wordgames and competitions are also awaited eagerly.
I know you all have essays etc, but if you could get stuff to me 12 hours before the Christmas meal I think that would be a suitable date and venue for publication and a resoundingly successful end to the year.
For all of you who did read the first issue, can you please give Xian your score. (I can fwd them if you don’t have his contact details).
Everyone, get in touch with Chris and arange to do some SRT training. He’s free all the time, so book a slot.
